ROMANTIC WEEKEND GETAWAYS

Set your sights on a romantic getaway near Perth

When was the last time you spontaneously jumped in the car and took off for a romantic weekend away without any distractions – just you and your plus one?

Whether you’ve been together for only few months, one year or too many to mention, you never need an excuse to breakaway and spend quality time together.
And Mandurah certainly fits the brief for a romantic weekend or cheeky midweek getaway.

Only an hour’s drive south of Perth, Mandurah is where the Darling Ranges disappear into the Indian Ocean. It’s where WA’s love affair (and perhaps yours soon too) begins, connecting the land and water. Where serene rivers flow through amazing bush landscapes, and where pristine beaches run for kilometres on end, sometimes without a soul in sight.

Whether your idea of romance is a laidback retreat relaxing on the water, getting amongst nature, immersing yourself in delectable foodie delights or a heart-pounding adventure, we’ve curated our top romantic picks for things to do in Mandurah, which should definitely score you some brownie points.

Amazing attractions

DOLPHIN ENCOUNTERS

There’s no better time than now to go dolphin spotting. With the breeding season well underway, this is when dolphins are at their most playful. The best vantage point to see these loveable creatures is without a doubt on the water. And there’s no shortage of ways to do it.

Take a scenic cruise or become your own skipper and hire a boat – no skippers ticket or boat licence required. If you want to get active, grab yourselves a stand up paddleboard from Mandurah Boat Hire or Star Surf & Skate and float your way along the waters to get up close and personal, jump on a tandem kayak and test your coordination.

Explore nature’s wonderland

This time of year is perfect for getting back to nature, and Mandurah has so much on display. From hiking and kayaking, sailing to stargazing – choose your preferred method and let the explorations begin!

There’s nothing like a dose of fresh air and if you both enjoy hiking, there are trails aplenty for you to discover. Spot remarkable wildlife that exists in tucked away places across Mandurah’s diverse parks and wetlands. Take a nature walk through the wilderness and you won’t be disappointed.

If you’ve never visited the Lake Clifton thrombolites in Yalgorup National Park, then this is a must-see. These rock-like formations date back 2,000 years and are the largest cluster of thrombolites you’ll find in the southern hemisphere. Scientists believe they are one of the first life forms on earth (way before dinosaurs were ever around!). Stroll along the jetty for some insta-worthy shots, or gain some insider knowledge on a guided tour with Salt and Bush Eco Tours.

If you’re both foodies at heart, make the most of your day – and your palate on one of the many culinary tours on offer. For the history buffs, there are a number of interesting buildings and museums that delve into the city’s remarkable past that are definitely worth a peruse.

A visit to Mandurah wouldn’t be complete without embracing the coast. And a great way to explore the endless strip of spectacular coastline, is to rent a couple of bikes and get pedalling on an e-bike from The Bike Kiosk that is located right next to the Mandurah Visitor Centre. With loads of opportunities for cruising convos with your plus one, you’ll quickly clock up the miles without even realising it. When it’s time to refuel, take a well-deserved break at Dolphin Quay.

School Holidays in Mandurah

8 epic outdoor school holiday adventures for the whole family

Feels like yesterday that the school term started, and now we quickly find ourselves staring down the barrel of another round of school holidays. Keeping the kids entertained is hard work, but with a little bit of inspiration and planning, it can be an adventure for everyone.

Less than an hour’s drive from Perth, Mandurah is perfect for a fun filled day trip outdoors, or an extended holiday spot. We’ve taken the guesswork out of what to see and do, with a range of unique activities the whole family will love.

Be a pirate for a day

Ahoy me hearties, your young explorers will have the ultimate time sailing the seven seas (Mandurah’s waterways and canals), on an epic pirate adventure on board a real life looking pirate ship.

Get your crew together and come dressed in your best pirate outfit, as you go searching for the infamous bottlenose dolphins and other wildly creatures. If you’re lucky, ye old sea captain may even let the kids steer the pirate ship and ring the bell. But beware, those who misbehave may be obliged to walk the plank!

Dolphin spotting

You don’t have to trek all the way to Monkey Mia to get up close to the wondrous bottlenose dolphins. Our pods of playful residents have made Mandurah’s waterways  their home for years, with more than 90 of these curious creatures leaping in and out of the Peel Harvey estuary every day. Take the family on a dolphin cruise and see how many you can spot!

Or hire a boat! Mandurah Boat and Bike Hire offers boats tanging from a four person dingy up to a 12-person pontoon boat and are conveniently located right in the heart of Mandjar Bay. Kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, fishing rods and crabbing nets are also available for hire.

Dolphins live and swim together in groups, so when you see one there’s likely to be more nearby, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled and camera ready.

Hit the bike trails

Get the kids out of the house and onto the track. Whether it’s in the bush or by the beach, there are stacks of cycling trails you can set off on at varying distances and levels. Bring your own bikes or save yourself the hassle and hire a bike for the day.

Cycle alongside dolphins

Is it a catamaran or a giant banana? Jump on a bike ride of a different kind on the water with Mandurah waterbikes. Easier than riding a bike, these waterbikes are steady and stable, so you won’t even get wet as you gently pedal and glide through the water. Hire a waterbike any day of the week during the school holidays and choose where you cruise, exploring Mandjar Bay and the stunning canals from a new perspective.

Go into the wild on a kayak

Explore hidden parts of the Peel Harvey Waterways by kayak on a guided private river or estuary tour with Salt and Bush Eco Tours. The tandem peddled kayaks are great for beginners and all level kayakers, which means you can spend more time concentrating on the incredible scenery and wildlife around you.

The ultimate foodies guide to Mandurah

While it’s easy to fall into the trap of hitting up the same place you went to last time or the first stop you see, there are many incredible food havens to feast your eyes on, that we bet you haven’t even heard of.

Mandurah Restaurants

Heading to Mandurah anytime soon? Here’s our favourite places to eat in Mandurah

While it’s easy to fall into the trap of hitting up the same place you went to last time or the first stop you see, there are many incredible food havens to feast your eyes on, that we bet you haven’t even heard of.

To avoid roaming around until you’re ravenous and weak at the knees hungry, we’ve hunted down the legendary foodie stops, popular eats and yummy experiences that you might otherwise only know about if you were a local.

The best coffee stops in Mandurah

Groundswell Coffee

The coffee roasters at Frothin Coffee like to do things old school, and by that we mean they roast their beans using a 100-year-old wood-fired method. Did you know, the very first commercial coffee roasters were wood fired? Owner and coffee roaster, Purri Gould is sticking with this tradition, using his authentically handmade wood-fired roasting machine made in Italy by Trabattoni, a 100+-year-old traditional coffee roasting family, to produce some pretty special blends.

These guys are pretty good at knowing what you want – even when you don’t! So, where can you find them? Head to Groundswell Drivethru – 99 Pinjarra Road, or lookout for the bright orange kombi van around town.

Mataya Eatery

Step inside those iconic pink doors and we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. It’s always warm and toasty at Mataya, and why wouldn’t it be with speciality coffees and wholesome goodness galore. But it’s not always about the coffee, these guys do a mean caffeine-free chia latte. With a dash of honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon, it’s sings heaven to your tastebuds.

Foodie-blog-perth

Come for a quick daytime meal, linger in the courtyard area, or stop by when you need food on the run. Our top picks are the acai bowls, warm bagels, toasties and you can’t go past their almond croissants. Mataya Eatery is situated on Sholl St just a short stroll from the Mandurah foreshore.

Frisky Deer

It’s impossible not to smile here! After you’ve perused all the gorgeous homewares, interiors, apparel and gifts at the Frisky Deer shop, make sure you order a fresh Margaret River Roasting Co coffee from the friendly baristas. Their lovingly baked homemade sweet treats and organic raw slices are also hard to pass up. The rest of the neighbourhood knows it too, so make sure you get in early before the cabinet runs out!

Frisky Deer Cafe

The best brekky breaks in Mandurah

Wood and Stone Cafe

A family-run business located right in the heart of Mandurah along the foreshore, Wood and Stone Cafe put friendly service and quality food and drink at the forefront of diners’ experience. With an inner-city feel, Wood and Stone is fast becoming a food staple for locals and tourists alike, with boutique breakfast options such as caprese baked eggs, their Wood and Stone waffles and brekky burger alongside premium coffee. The cafe won ‘Best Breakfast’ at the coveted 2022 WA Gold Plate Awards, beating a number of other top eateries.

Café Moka

No place does brunch quite like Café Moka. No matter what time of the day you wake up, Moka serves up their delicious brunch menu from 7 am to 3 pm. And it’s a nice stroll down to the waterfront along Mandurah’s Dolphin Quay Marina.

Before you hit up their selection of freshly made cakes that are baked in-house daily, you may want to check out the chef’s daily specials. Some past favourites include Cajun fried chicken on waffles, homemade potato and leek rosti, or a Spanish flair chorizo, slow roasted sofrito. The kids will also love love love the pancakes.

Miami Bakehouse

Does the average meat pie ever leave you wanting more? That’ll never be the case when you try one of the award-winning and unique pie flavours at Miami Bakehouse. All of their pies (and there are many to choose from) are made from scratch using the best local, WA ingredients.

But this bakehouse isn’t just about the pies. If you get in early enough, grab a loaf of their organic flour sourdough bread, and with a cabinet full of doughnuts, custard tarts, slices, chocolate eclairs, cheesecakes, lamingtons and more treats than we can mention, there’s something to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth.

As if they haven’t won enough awards already, Miami Bakehouse also recently won the Most Successful Pastry Exhibitor and Champion Pastry Exhibit at the Perth Royal Food Awards 2021. Stopping by their Myalup store? Make sure to check out the fun KangaART installation for some Insta snaps.

Tods Cafe

Foodie-blog-Mandurah

Take a walk on the boardwalk along Mandurah Terrace, and you’ll stumble upon a local favourite where it’s all about great coffees, authentic food and friendly service. Mandurah is innately relaxed by nature, and Tods Cafe effortlessly offers up the leisurely quality that comes with dining outdoors. Slow down for a moment, embrace the morning sun, and let your mind wander as you people watch and tuck into Tods belly-aching brekky menu.

The best bites for lunch in Mandurah

Wood and Stone Cafe

There’s a lot of flavours that can be packed in between two buns, and Wood and Stone’s gourmet burgers are exactly what you’ll crave after a morning spent hitting the walking trails, birdwatching or exploring the natural wonders and wetlands. This homey café is the perfect place to put your feet up and recharge. And they’ve just launched their spring menu, which features their famous mouth-watering pulled pork burger, buttermilk fried chicken burger and southern fried cauliflower burger.

Café Coast

Two words: Seafood frenzy. Mandurah and the Peel region is renowned for it and there’s no better place to enjoy freshly caught fare than at this casual waterside restaurant at Port Bouvard Marina. Don’t just take out word for it, Café Coast was named winner of the 2021 Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award. Book a table or just call in!

Sharky’s Fish & Chips

Fish Chips at Mandurah Ocean Marina
Fish & Chips at Sharky's Mandurah

Sometimes all you’re craving is good old-fashioned fish and chips, right? Whether your preference is grilled or battered, the guys at Sharky’s Mandurah know their fish, and you can be sure it’s always fresh and locally sourced. Dine alfresco by the beautiful surrounds of Dolphin Quay or grab some takeaway for a picnic in the fresh open air. If you prefer to stay indoors, the new indoor kids play area will keep the young ones occupied while you enjoy a peaceful moment to eat.

Silk Thai

Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Untitled 7

Silk Thai is a local institution for authentic Thai cuisine. If you’re after a quick bite, their delicious lunch menu features flavoursome and aromatic curries and stir-fry dishes that really packs a punch. Silk Thai have honed their flavour profiles over many years, using fresh local ingredients without compromising the fragrant flavours that is Thai cuisine.

Not a fan of the hot and spicy? You don’t have to be. Only half the dishes on their menu contain any chilli at all, and most can be adjusted to suit your taste. If you’re passing through, their new drive-thru service will have you in and out in a flash.

The Hummingbird Plant Based

Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Untitled 8

The Hummingbird Plant Based, Mandurah’s first exclusive plant-based café, is conveniently located next door to its sister café, The Hummingbird Waterside Café. Their all-day vegan and the gluten-free menu includes a ‘smoked salmon’ on rosti, chai panna cotta granola and Buffalo ‘chicken’ tacos.

Owner and chef Carly has also recently introduced flexible dining between their 2 venues. Vegans can enjoy a meal with friends and family without being frustrated there’s nothing on the menu for them. Order a meal off the plant based menu and they’ll bring it over to you at The Hummingbird.

The best places to wine and dine for dinner in Mandurah

Flics Kitchen

Gnnochi

Not afraid to push the boundaries of Mandurah’s foodie scene, owner and head chef of Flics Kitchen, Felicity Evans continues to create culinary creativity with her forever changing menu at this casual dining establishment. And the flavour combos are out of this world, with ingredients too hard to pronounce. Think Exmouth Gold Band snapper with fennel a la greque, yuzu and truffle beurre. And handmade rabbit ravioli with Jerusalem artichoke, oyster mushroom, salted ricotta and sage brown butter. It’s not hard to see why they were voted winners of the 2021 AGFG Readers’ Choice Award for best Regional Café!

Flics also put on some epic dinner events. Coming up is a 5 course plant based dinner on Thursday 9 September.

Brewvino

Okay yes, this is technically a bar, but Brewvino is also a kitchen that serves an assortment of rustic and quirky dishes to share so that instantly elevates it to legend status. Brewvino’s motto is ‘good food is best shared with friends, so we recommend going with a few peeps and ordering the Abrolhos Islands half shell scallop with XO butter, pan-fried gnocchi, Backwood Valley beef rib eye, and throw in a pizza or two to really satisfy everyone’s appetite.

This venue’s stylish and relaxed vibe is what Mandurah is all about. It’s also one of the best spots to enjoy uninterrupted views of the waterways.

Redmanna Waterfront Restaurant

Get yourself to Redmanna where legit, everything oozes pure class. Sourcing only the highest quality and best Australian ingredients, Redmanna recently introduced a new menu and we recommend trying their duck breast with beetroot, caramelised red cabbage and blueberry jus. Following the success of their recent truffle degustation dinner, they’re also serving their truffle menu Wednesdays to Sundays, but it’s only for a limited time.

Cobblers Tavern

Cobblers Tavern Mandurah

Cobbler’s Tavern has a reputation for warm service, delicious food, and a great atmosphere.

Welcome to the place you wish was your local. Bar Therapy is somewhere you can relax and enjoy good times with family and friends – the best kind of therapy! Aside from their killer cocktail list (there are too many delectable concoctions to mention), the kitchen dishes up a load of tasty morsels and burgers. We highly recommend going for their famous chilli salt squid and naan sliders.

You can find Bar Therapy at the historical Tuckey House landmark on Mandurah’s Waterfront.

Peel Wine Estate

If wines are more your palate, then a day drip to Peel Estate Winery is a day well spent. Open daily, you can sample their quality wines and hang out for hours in their beautiful picnic surrounds and BBQ areas. BYO food and drinks (non-alcoholic) is encouraged.

Our ancestors gave us the name, Mandjoogoordap and its meaning is “meeting place of the heart”.

It is respectful to the land, spirituality and the people. This place is our heartland or kaaleepga and our names are more than names, they are concepts that have names within names which gives a true meaning of the human relationship with land and Spirit.

For me, the thrombolites in the Yalgorup National Park are the most significant visitor attraction and they attract global interest. Thrombolites are the oldest known living bacterial life form, surviving after millions of years of existence. This rare and endangered natural feature is also very spiritual, playing a big part in our creation story. They act as a very visual link to the Aboriginal heritage of the region and when the wind blows, it is a very spiritual experience.

The waterways are Mandurah’s best asset. The co-existence of the waterways as a popular resource, and our most important Spiritual asset, reassures me that there will always be an opportunity to show visitors something special in many places around the area. I find that people who go on our tours are very respectful. I see a range of reactions and changed opinions.

When people become aware of the amazing local Aboriginal culture, they often become emotional as their eyes open to something they didn’t know. Mandurah has become a more attractive place to visit in recent times. It has so much to offer and it’s great to see many tourism businesses making the most of the natural assets such as the waterways.

GEORGE’S TIP FOR A RE-CHARGE GETAWAY

Nanga Mill campsite in Dwellingup. It’s a place we can chill out and get back to nature. The land and the forest give you good energy.

I really love the waterways of Mandurah – and it all revolves around our beautiful Mandjar Bay; it really is the heart of Mandurah and a lot of my Mandurah-themed works are inspired by it.

There is a real community connection to it – as well as the Old Bridge with its multi generations of fisher people. I have my own gallery inside the Mandurah Visitor Centre and create original paintings, prints and Australian made gifts to promote our amazing region and beyond.

I have seen some big changes to the area in recent times. The Old Bridge replacement is an obvious one, as well as an increase in visitor numbers with the ease of travelling down from Perth on the train. I think even more community involvement and supporting local in recent years has also had a big positive factor in the growth of our city and the connection of our people.

I don’t spend a lot of time at the front of my gallery but when I do, I love to have a chat. There has definitely been an increase in tourists from Asia and there have been quite a few young couples from Europe doing the big drive around the country popping in to visit!

The region has the most amazing natural qualities. The waterways are by far our biggest asset, with our dolphin population being a massive drawcard for tourists. One of my favourite things to do is head out to the Peel Estuary in our dingy at sunset with a wine in hand while my man catches a feed of our famous blue swimmer crabs.

Our annual Crab Fest is a great time to visit the region, and the dolphins often put on a spectacle of their own, delighting the crowds. It is now one of WA’s most loved festivals and I am so proud to create the art for it!

We are the only restaurant in Western Australia that grows all of the fruit and veggies used in our kitchen which means you’ll only ever see seasonal dishes on our menu.

One of the things that makes Jarrahdale unique is that it experiences four true seasons. We have proper, cold winters, hot summers and true spring and autumn conditions. This means we can grow a nice variety of fruit and vegetables in the Millbrook Restaurant garden, giving us a diverse arsenal to work with.

We are the only restaurant in Western Australia that grows all of the fruit and veggies used in our kitchen which means you’ll only ever see seasonal dishes on our menu. Another unique aspect is that we chefs do all of the gardening. From planting to harvest we are on our knees in the dirt, weeding and nurturing so when the crop is finally ready for the kitchen, we have the utmost respect for the produce and treat it accordingly.

For all of our other produce, such as meat and cheese, we try to source as locally, sustainably and small scale as possible. We love family-run businesses and use a barter system for some ingredients, swapping Millbrook wine for what we need.

No Waste Mondays is a concept that’s proven incredibly popular. We create a new menu each week, using whatever is left over from the weekend’s trade. We are consistently booked out and even have a waiting list of people trying to get a table.

I’ve lived on the property for three years and I love it. I like to say Jarrahdale is close to nothing but near everything. It’s in such easy reach of Mandurah, Perth, Fremantle, Rockingham and Armadale we get a great mix of customers from lots of locations.

Jarrahdale has so much history and such natural beauty. The bush and walk trails such as Kitty’s Gorge and Serpentine Dam are fantastic. The best way to top off these experiences is with Millbrook wine and a meal at our restaurant.

Millbrook Winery and Restaurant was ranked at number five in the 2018 West Australian Good Food Guide Awards top 50 restaurants in WA.

Soon that part of the business became so successful they built a stand-alone bakery and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, we have three retail stores and a distribution centre. Mum and Dad still work in the business as do I and my two brothers.

We are very grateful we get to do what we do together with our team. Our customers include everyone from hipsters to grannies, corporates to tradies. Families are also an integral part of our customer base, particularly on the weekends with road trippers heading south for the day.

We are all about the experience; not only our delicious products but providing a beautiful space to sit and enjoy them. We have room for the whole family here; there is a lot of joy to be gained when food is enjoyed together. The local region is perfect for families.

We love to take our kids into Mandurah for fish and chips and they just love the foreshore. There’s always lots happening with markets, pony rides and face painting.

Our kids’ favourite place is Adventurescape Playground in South Yunderup and we go as often as we can.

One of the things I love about this region is that it’s still relatively untouched and has kept its country feel.

The Murray River kids’ playground and suspension bridge in Pinjarra is still a favourite as is Dwellingup with its wineries and fruit stalls and Lake Navarino in Waroona.

I loved growing up here and I’m so glad I get to share that with my kids. The open space, fresh air, trees and just being surrounded by nature. There is always a good sense of community.

JODIE’S FAVOURITES AT PINJARRA BAKERY

  • Honey Chilli chicken and vegetable pie (packs a punch of flavour!)
  • Vanilla slice (Crowdpleaser)
  • Classic beef mince pie (best in Australia)
  • Sausage roll (Can’t go wrong!)
