Love to paint? Why not take it ‘plein air’!
French for open air, ‘plein air’ painting is all about capturing the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject outdoors. And that’s exactly what the Plein Air Down Under Outdoor Painting Festival sets out to do.

Western Australia’s largest outdoor painting festival returns this year during the September long weekend (21-23 September), providing a unique opportunity for artists to share their love of painting outdoors amongst the magnificent surrounds of Mandurah’s town centre, cultural precinct and the historic town of Pinjarra.

But you don’t have to be a Vincent Van Gogh to enjoy what’s on offer. Whatever your age or level of artistic skills – there’s something for everyone – spectators and art collectors alike.

What’s on at the festival hub

Join us for an exciting weekend of art, music, and community spirit at the Plein Air Downunder Painting Festival. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect each day:

Day 1: Mandurah Performing Arts Centre

Kick off the festival with artist registrations, workshops, and live painting demonstrations. Enjoy free activities for all ages, including painting sessions, children’s art activities, and live music. In the evening, relax with food, drinks, and a panel discussion with featured artists.

Day 2: Explore Pinjarra

Experience the charm of Pinjarra with live painting along the Heritage Trail, engaging activities for both adults and children, and captivating demonstrations by renowned artists. Don’t miss the live music performances and optional nocturne painting session in the evening.

Day 3: Grand Finale in Mandurah

The festival culminates with the exciting Quick Draw Painting Competition, followed by an awards ceremony and exhibition. It’s the perfect chance to see art created in real-time and maybe even purchase a piece to take home.

Be sure to check out the full festival program and detailed schedule across the weekend.

Want to register as an artist?

All artists who register to paint at the Plein Air Down Under Outdoor Painting Festival can enter two paintings into the exhibition to be held at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Judges will be awarding artwork across various categories and there’s a prize pool of over $12,000 up for grabs.

Family Weekend Getaways

Mandurah is one of the most popular year-round destinations for family weekend getaways in WA. Check out some of our favourite things to do.

Family Weekend Getaways

Weekend getaways with the kids in Mandurah

A weekend getaway should be relaxing, right? After the long arduous car ride, bickering in the back seat, restless toddlers and constant squawks of ‘are we there yet’ sometimes it’s anything but.

An easy hour’s drive from Perth changes all that.  Mandurah is one of the most popular year-round destinations for weekend getaways in WA. Whether it’s on land or water, action-packed adventure or peaceful respite, there’s much fun in the sun to be had for everyone.
We’ve hand picked some of our favourite things to do, to help you plan your next weekender with the fam in our relaxed part of the Peel.

Family-friendly places to stay

Where to set up base for your seaside adventures? Having enough space is always a factor when holidaying as a family, but the good thing is there are many different spacious accommodation options to choose from.

Seashells Mandurah 2000x1500 aw

If you’re after self-contained apartment style rooms, book your stay at Seashells. With its beachfront location, infinity pool, tennis court and free in-house movies, you’ll be perfectly relaxed for the weekend ahead.

Prefer to stay by the canals? Then head to C Mandurah Resort with your choice of 1,2 or 3 bedroom serviced apartments.

The modern family chalets at Marina Chalets are close to everything – just a five minute walk to the foreshore. And your front door is only 50 metres away from a child-friendly beach and playground.

Love to caravan or camp? Then secure your powered spot at Mandurah Coastal Holiday Park. The park is located right in the city centre and close to Town Beach. Or book into Mandurah Caravan & Tourist Park , a 4 star family tourist park on the outskirts of Mandurah.

Things to do: Day 1

Before you check-in to your accommodation, stretch your legs and refuel at the newest kid on the block, Boundary Island Brewery overlooking – you guessed it – Boundary Island.

Boundary Island Brewery
Boundary Island Brewery

The beer is brewed right here on the waterfront, so it doesn’t get any more local than this! The kids will love the unique playground featuring Esmeralda – the spirit of Boundary Island. Oh and did we mention the food and service is amazing?

P.S Dogs are welcome!

If you don’t plan to spend the whole afternoon at the brewery (we wouldn’t hold you back if you did), then it’s time to get adventurous with the kids. Jump aboard the iconic Pirate Ship Mandurah for a unique cruise through Mandurah’s dolphin highway and gorgeous marinas. You never know what underwater creatures you might spot!

If your sea legs aren’t up for it, grab a map from the Mandurah Visitor Centre and follow the Instagram Trail where you can spot amazing 3D art along the way – definitely worthy of a few selfies and family snaps.

If the kids love to skate head to the newly developed Mandurah Skate Park – designed by skaters for skaters. It includes 3 skate zones for varying skills levels and it’s also great for BMX and scooters. You can find the skate park along the western foreshore.

After all of this fresh air, the kids are sure to build up an appetite. Swing by Mandurah’s Ocean Marina to grab some fish and chips for dinner, then set up a picnic at Town Beach for the best sunset views. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a fun-filled start to the weekend.

Skate Park Mandurah

Where to eat and explore: Day 2

Start your day off on the right foot with a wholesome breakfast at one of Mandurah’s many delicious cafes along the foreshore or ocean marina. Depending on where you’re staying, our top picks include Café Moka along the marina, The Hummingbird and its sister café, The Hummingbird Plant Based or Wood & Stone Cafe on Mandurah Terrace and The Bay Café by the estuary.

Mandurah is full of natural marvels and the best way to experience it on land is along one of the many family-friendly cycle paths. Choose the coast or the forest and start exploring! No need to tow bikes either, just pop into The Bike Kiosk at the Mandurah Visitor Centre to rent some e-bikes and a kids trailer.

Ebike Ride along the Mandurah Foreshore

If you’re travelling with little people, treat them to a train ride around town on the Tourist Fun Train followed up by a visit to Amaze Miniature Park. Here the kiddies can explore 70 lifelike miniature buildings and interactive model trains, play a round of mini golf, wind their way around the hedge maze and run-a-muck in the playground.

Heading in by 4WD? Then make sure you pack your fishing rods on this trip and sneak in a session at Tims Thicket Beach – the closest 4WD beach south of Perth. With perfect weather year-round there’s no reason not to!

Golf Weekends

Are you an avid golfer? Then surely you’ve heard of WA’s premier golf coast! If not, it’s time you packed your bags for a golfing weekender in Mandurah.

Golf Weekends

Tee up for a weekend away on Mandurah’s ‘Golf Coast’

Are you an avid golfer? Then surely you’ve heard of WA’s premier golf coast! If not, it’s time you packed your bags for a golf weekend getaway in Mandurah.

Mandurah and the Peel region may be one of the most underrated play and stay golfing destinations, but it’s here where you’ll find a number of cleverly designed and challenging courses set amongst spectacular scenery.

Sure, you should come for the golf, but what makes Mandurah the ultimate golfer’s weekend away is everything else that exudes relaxation.

And you’ll be pleased to hear that two golf courses in this region are featured in Golfing Australia’s Top 100 courses for 2022 (read on to find out which ones they are).

Here’s where to play, stay and dine on your weekend on the golf coast.

The Cut

If you only visit one course during the weekend, make it The Cut, located right on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Just don’t let the stunning ocean views put you off your game! Practice on the driving range, get some tips from a PGA pro then head out for a round of 9 or 18 holes.

Coming in at #63 of the top 100 golf courses in Australia, it’s not hard to see why. As Ashley Clinch describes, “The Cut weaves its way through some big dunes next to the Indian Ocean. The first four holes on the front nine next to the ocean are good fun and the back nine from start to finish is all fun. I found the course in excellent condition given how much golf is played here.”

For your post round relaxation, the onsite café and bistro will have you replenished and back out for another round in no time! When it’s time to put your feet up, relax at your home base by the beach at Seashells Mandurah

Looking for somewhere to wine and dine? Venture over to Redmanna on the waterfront with even more gorgeous views. If you’re heading down with a group, Flic’s Kitchen has some of the best share plates to devour or for an extra special outing, get stuck into the chef’s choice 5 course degustation, with matching wines or gin optional.

Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club

Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club Mandurah

After a good night’s sleep at The Sebel Mandurah, it’s time to hit the green at Meadow Springs, voted #57 by Golf Australia

It’s golf as nature intended, with a course that’s set by the natural features of the land. The towering 200 year old Tuart trees that line the generous fairways are a sight to behold. Few of the holes run parallel to each other, which only adds to the feeling of having the course all to yourself and being at one with nature. Which is what we’re all about in Mandurah!

The first class facility features a day and night driving range, putting and chipping green and 3 practice bunkers. Just like The Cut, you don’t have to be a member to come play, but dress standards do apply. Golfers must wear a collared shirt, dress pants or shorts, soft spiked golf shoes or approved footwear with socks. Females also have the option of wearing a dress or skort.

When it’s time for a bite and brew, head straight to brewvino on the boardwalk where you can unwind and talk tactics for tomorrow.

Pinjarra Golf Club

Just a stone’s throw from Mandurah is where you’ll find another exciting course to tackle. Pinjarra Golf Club plays host to a number of annual major events including the WA 2 Ball Ambrose Championships and Ladies and Mens Amateur Open competitions. Tournament Director of Golf Australia has even gone as far to say, “the club’s putting greens are “among the best putting surface in Australia”.

You’ll need to be a member to play at Pinjarra Golf Club, but flexi memberships are available for both 9 and 18 holes – perfect for the occasional weekender.

While you’re in Pinjarra, make sure you stop by the award winning Pinjarra Bakery – voted Australia’s best meat pie in the 2021 and 2019 Great Aussie Pie Competition. Something tells us though, you won’t stop at just the meat pie!

For another stay option, rest easy at Dolphin Quay Apartments with all the self-contained essentials to make this place your home away from home.

Secret Harbour Golf Links

Secret Harbour Golf Links

A great way to round off your weekend of golf is at Secret Harbour Golf Links. The 18-hole golf course designed by golfer Graham March is open to the public – no membership required. You can enjoy the ultimate golfing experience, which includes 18 holes, a motorised cart and brassiere lunch. Book online to take advantage of their special rates.

Brilliant golf courses, stunning views, top-notch food and accommodation. What more could you ask for in a weekend getaway to Mandurah?

Take it from the local residents who know all about relaxing in Mandurah. We’re talking about the friendly playful dolphins who choose to live here in the wild. Did you know, the largest population of bottlenose dolphins in WA can be found here? For the best vantage point, you and your girlfriends will want to jump on a Murray River lunch cruise.

Mandurah is all about kicking back and enjoying the fresh open air, and there’s plenty of ways to do it. Go for a leisurely bike ride along the foreshore, drift along the waters on a stand up paddle board or, hire out your own boat for the day and tell the skipper where you want to go.

To truly clear the mind and feel like your miles away from it all, get the girlies together for a guided kayak tour along the protected Peel-Harvey estuary. It’s the kind of peace and solitude you won’t appreciate until you’re in the moment. Definitely worth bumping up to the top of your list of things to do.

Create memorable bonding moments with an evening of stargazing, led by expert local geologist and nature lover Sebastian of Salt and Bush Eco Tours. The striking skies of Mandurah are perfect for stargazing, and you’ll be able to get a closer view of the night sky through a telescope.
