An Insider's Look Into The Surfing Scene

There’s nothing more relaxing than being out on the ocean
For local surfer Ian ‘Wooly’ Macpherson, surfing isn’t just a hobby – it’s a way of life.
Since he was a little tacker, Wooly has been riding the waves in Mandurah. These days, when he’s not chasing the perfect break, he’s teaching others how to surf, coaching aspiring pros, and sharing his knowledge at his iconic surf shop, Star Surf + Skate.
While WA’s Southwest is famous for its waves, Mandurah boasts some incredible surf spots that rival the best. With consistent swells and diverse breaks, it’s the perfect spot for Perth surfers looking for a quick getaway. And the best time to hit the surf? Wooly says autumn to spring delivers the best conditions, with large storms bringing powerful swells to the coast.
We caught up with Wooly to chat about Mandurah’s thriving surf scene and why everyone should give surfing a go.
“I started surfing at around 9 or 10 years old at Avalon Bay. My parents’ place was just a short walk from the beach, and with my mum being a keen swimmer, we spent loads of time in the ocean during the ’70s and ’80s.
I started on a ‘foamie’ – a basic polystyrene beaded-foam surfboard. I even painted it with house paint to avoid rashes! Eventually, I moved up to a second-hand fibreglass single fin board and began honing my skills at Falcon Bay.
By the time I was 12, I joined the Mandurah Board Riders Club, and I’ve been a member ever since.”
“Geary’s Surf Break! It’s named after Ray Geary, a City Beach surfer whose family shack sits on the hill behind Geary’s beach. He still lives there today at more than 80 years old!
Gearies only comes to life with a big swell, so it doesn’t break often, but when it does, it’s magic. These days, it’s a busy spot, but I have fond memories of surfing there as a teenager with just a few mates.”
“Mandurah has an incredible surfing community. According to legendary surfboard maker Len Dibben, Perth surfers have been heading down here since the 1950s.
Mandurah Board Riders Club has been running since 1978, and I’m proud to be its first-ever life member. Every surf break has its own crew of dedicated surfers who look after it, and while it can get busy, there’s a good sense of order in the lineup.
Mandurah has also produced some top-tier talent. Many surfers have won WA state championships, and a few, like Chris Fullston and myself, have even competed in professional events.”
“Absolutely! Mandurah Board Riders runs a junior series in summer and a senior series in winter. Surfing WA also hosts state and national competitions right here in Mandurah every year.”
“Surfing has shaped my life. It’s taken me to incredible places, introduced me to lifelong friends, and kept me connected to the ocean. The feeling of riding a wave is unlike anything else.
Growing up in Mandurah with the beach on my doorstep was a privilege, and the local community has always supported my surf school and surf shop.”
“Surfing is pure fun. It boosts your fitness, strength, balance, and flexibility – we always stretch before hitting the waves! Spending time in the ocean is also great for your mental and physical health. The more you surf, the more confident and comfortable you become in the water.”
“At Mandurah Surf Lessons, we cater to all ages and skill levels. We have around six fully qualified coaches on the team, many of whom also work at Star Surf + Skate.
Since 1998, Wooly has owned and operated Star Surf + Skate, Mandurah’s go-to surf store. Located along Mandurah Terrace, it’s a hub for local surfers and newcomers alike.
In 2019, Star Surf + Skate won the SBIA Single Door Best Shop in Australia award – the only WA surf shop to ever achieve this honour!
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned surfer looking for a new challenge, Mandurah has the perfect waves waiting for you. Grab a board, take a lesson, and experience the thrill of surfing in one of WA’s best coastal destinations!
