Discover a rewarding bushland experience on the 1.6 kilometre Nyoongar and Don Shepherd Nature Trail, an easy walk through native woodland in the City of Rockingham. Combining the 600m Nyoongar Bush Walk with the 1 kilometre Don Shepherd Nature Trail, this peaceful trail showcases the beauty and biodiversity of the Swan Coastal Plain.
The trail winds through banksia, tuart, marri and jarrah woodlands, with native birds and seasonal wildflowers adding colour and interest along the way. In spring, orchids and flowering shrubs emerge beneath the trees, creating a vibrant display of local flora.
The Nyoongar Bush Walk features six interpretive signs, beautifully illustrated by Safety Bay Senior High School students, sharing insights into the six Nyoongar seasons, traditional food sources and the deep connection between the Nyoongar people and Country. This trail provides a unique opportunity to learn about the region’s cultural heritage while enjoying the natural environment.
Situated on the historic Karnup townsite, originally settled through the 1920s Soldiers and Group Settlement Scheme, the trail also offers a glimpse into the area’s past. With picnic shelters, BBQ facilities and parking at the trailhead, this dog-friendly walk is perfect for families, nature lovers and anyone seeking a short yet enriching outdoor experience.
