Mandurah’s Top Spots for Sustainable Fun

Mandurah is a place of exceptional natural beauty and a strong commitment to sustainability. As Australia’s Top Tourism Town, this coastal paradise offers eco-conscious visitors a wide range of sustainable adventures that truly connect with the heart.

Ready for a journey that combines the best of nature and sustainability? In this guide, we’ll unveil the hidden gems that allow you to connect with the environment while having a fantastic time. From the Giants of Mandurah to electric-powered boats, we’re about to take you on a green journey through Mandurah’s top eco-friendly experiences.

Giants of Mandurah

The Giants of Mandurah, crafted by the acclaimed Danish recycle artist, stand as a remarkable testament to the creative power of recycling.

Crafted from reclaimed wood, these five larger-than-life sculptures are more than just artistic wonders; they symbolise the importance of protecting our natural world.

What makes the Giants even more impressive is that they’re not just there to be admired – they invite you on a quest. Cleverly hidden in natural settings around Mandurah, you’ll need to embark on a delightful treasure hunt to find them, following a trail of clues.

To assist in your quest, you can pick up a free booklet at the Mandurah Visitor Centre, complete with QR codes and Google Maps coordinates to locate the parking areas at the trail heads.

But before you set out, artist Thomas Dambo invites you to listen to his poem, “The Rhythm of Raindrops”, which beautifully intertwines with the creation story of the traditional owners, the Bindjareb Noongar people.

This quest takes you on a journey through the cycle of water, from the ocean to the air, from the air to the land, and back again. You’ll traverse the lands of the Bindjareb Noongar people, explore the Peel Yalgorup wetland system, and venture out onto an estuary that’s twice the size of Sydney Harbour, all while unraveling the story of these majestic giants.

Creery Wetlands

Nestled away from the bustling heart of Mandurah lies the city’s best-kept secret – Creery Wetland Nature Reserve.

Just a short drive from the city center, these wetlands – that hold international importance as the largest wetland in South Western Australia – are a natural wonderland, making them a magnet for waterbirds and a seasonal haven for 22 species of migratory shorebirds that journey as far as Japan to wet their feathers.

If you’re a bird enthusiast, this is your sweet spot, offering endless delights through binoculars. The Creery Wetlands are gated to safeguard the resident wildlife from predators like foxes and stray cats.

With two boardwalks providing scenic views of the estuary, informative panels, a viewing platform, and a bird hide, you’ll find a fantastic vantage point to observe waterbirds.

These wetlands are more than just a picturesque escape; they are a vital habitat for various waterbirds, including those fascinating migratory shorebirds. Some of these extraordinary birds weigh as little as 30 grams and spend their southern summer in Australian lakes and beaches, only to embark on an incredible journey to their northern hemisphere breeding grounds.

But that’s not all – the reserve is also a home to a thriving population of Quendas, a native marsupial.

Located on the north-eastern side of the Peel Inlet, adjacent to the Mariners Cove residential estate, and south-east of the Mandurah Bypass bridge, the Creery Wetland Nature Reserve promises a nature-filled adventure in the heart of Mandurah’s unspoiled wilderness.

Expect a spoiling fit for royalty with four savoury snacks and three delightfully decadent desserts, along with two rounds of tea or coffee.

Breweries

Boundary Island Brewery

After a game of golf and six beers, the Boundary Island Brewery concept was born. Overlooking the water at Mandurah Quay Resort, it’s unsurprising the vibe is laid back, when all business plans are made on a napkin. Boundary Island Brewery is a relaxed breakfast venue, lunchtime local, and dinner tradition.

There are eight different beers at any one time, from the German pilsner and sweet and spicy ginger beer to the tropical IPA. And if you need further reason to convince you, they won the 2023 Best New Exhibitor trophy along with six medals at the Australian International Beer Awards.

Thorny Devil Brewery

From a frustration with beers that seemed all head and no body, the Thorny Devil Brewery was born. The brewery has since transformed into a contender in the craft beer world after winning numerous awards at the Australian International Beer Awards, Australian Craft Beer Awards, and Perth Royal Beer Show.

Located on the shores of Lake Clifton — home to the thrombolites — the brewing process incorporates rainwater, traditional German techniques, and fresh ingredients sourced from around the globe. Let the kids run free while you do the hard yakka drinking and dining at the BBQ restaurant.

Word to the wise — the steak sandwich is worthy of a whirl, or tuck into the selection of share plates like salt and pepper squid, whole boneless crispy chicken, pork belly bites, or 12-hour slow-cooked lamb shoulder.

Flics Kitchen

Flics first opened its doors in 2016 and has been popular with locals ever since. The restaurant plates up breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a menu that is designed to be shared.

Redmanna Waterfront Restaurant

From blue manna crabs and crayfish to prawns, scallops, and line-caught red emperor, Redmanna is known for its local seafood. Situated near the Mandurah Bridge, you’ll find unobstructed estuary views through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Mandurah’s most awarded restaurant. The seafood menu changes weekly, but if you’re in the market for something special, we recommend their signature seafood tower.

Mandurah is Australia’s Top Tourism Town 2023

Mandurah has once again made its mark on the tourism map, securing a prestigious award at the ‘Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards’ held in Canberra today. Mandurah’s exceptional tourism offerings have earned it Gold in this esteemed national competition.

Visit Mandurah General Manager, Anita Kane, said this is a remarkable achievement and it’s on the back of an exciting year of tourism triumphs for Mandurah.  The resounding success of ‘Thomas Dambo’s – Giants of Mandurah’ exhibition initiated by FORM Building a State of Creativity brought an unprecedented surge in visitor numbers to the Mandurah Visitor Centre.

Our winning streak began in 2022 when Mandurah was crowned Western Australia’s Top Tourism Town, and in May 2023 we took home the coveted top spot again for the second year in a row.

In 2022, Mandurah proudly secured the Bronze award at the national level, and this year, we have raised the bar even higher beating off strong competition from across Australia.

“Here at Visit Mandurah, we are thrilled that our stunning coastal city has been recognised on a national level as a Top Tourism Town. It is a prestigious title and one we truly believe Mandurah is worthy of. For the last five years in particular, Mandurah’s tourism industry has adapted, innovated, and reimagined its offerings. It is a real joy to see these efforts recognised,” said Ms Kane.

Mandurah’s exceptional performance at the ‘Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards’ showcases the city’s intrinsic natural beauty, warm hospitality, and superb tourism experiences, solidifying its position as a premier destination for visitors from Western Australia and beyond.

This achievement would not have been possible without the collective effort of our tourism community and the support of the City of Mandurah.  We extend our grateful thanks to everyone who has contributed to making Mandurah the top tourism town it is today.

Ms. Kane added, “Congratulations also to Dwellingup, which clinched the Gold in the Tiny Town Category. It’s wonderful to see national recognition bestowed upon two destinations within the Peel Region.”
